The first thing you must know to use Alt is to make sure that Num Lock is turned on (You can find Num Lock in your numeric pad in the right side of your keyboard).
Now, follow these steps:
1. Make sure Num Lock is on.
2. Hold down the Alt key (any Alt key will do).
3. Type the proper number sequence on the numeric pad for the chosen symbol (ex. 0254).
4. Release the Alt key.
